Any way to speed up response from RH9?

Thursday, July 3, 2003 3:09 AM - Mike

As I mentioned in my posts below, got the admin kinks out of Red Hat 9, viz., iptables, font server enabled, ports enabled, FAQ 2 mods implemented, etc. But...

It is running awfully slow. Red Hat 5 worked so much faster. Any suggestions on how to speed this up? I know it's not hardware. Our server is running dual 2.2 GHz Xeons, SCSI 160 drives, and 1GB memory. The only apps currently are sendmail, httpd (very little traffic), telnet (very little traffic) and vsftpd (very little traffic).

The slow response is due to the new font rendering feature in RH9.0. To speed up Xmanager, please configure some options in the GNOME menu:

- Application->preferences->Font->Font Redering: Monochrome
- Application->preferences->Font->Details->Smoothing, Hinting: None
- Application->preferences->Menus & Toolbars->Show icon in menus: Unchecked

Also, you may use KDE instead of GNOME.

Hope to solve the problem.
