DHCP IP ADDRESS [5]

Hi,

I have set up XManager using broadcast with no problems. I am using desktop pc's and have their IP into the /etc/hosts file. Now I have to configure serveral laptops to use XManager. How do I do this? Without a static IP, what do I put in the /etc/hosts. Putting my IP in the hosts file was the only way that I could get broadcast to work for me. I don't want an Xsession in, I need the Linux desktop on their laptops.

Could someone help me please.

When your desktops have dynamic IP addresses, it's better to remove all entries for the desktops from the reverse lookup table of DNS server.

By default, the reverse lookup table is located in:

/var/named/first-192.xxx.xxx.xxx

The IP address is the one used by the Linux server.

If you do not put client machines in the reverse table, you don't have to edit "/etc/hosts" file.

In other words, delete all information regarding the IP address and hostnames for client PCs from DNS table and the /etc/hosts file. It will fix your problem.

Thanks for the response. So there is nothing that I have to configure on the server for DHCP IP addresses? Just configure their laptop with the server IP? Just want to clarify this before I begin this project.

You should configure the reverse lookup table of the DNS in Linux. Remove all IP addresses allocated by the DHCP server.

Is there anything on the Windows side that has to be added or configured other than downloading the software?

Never mind, I figured it out. I hadn't registered the IP that I wanted to use with Broadcast.
