desktop messaging system cannot be started

Monday, November 10, 2003 11:06 PM - Randall

Trying to connect to an HP-UX (11.0) server I receive the message "desktop messaging system cannot be started". When I click "ok", Xwindows shuts down. I just installed HP-UX on this server, and watching the messages on the console, I know that CDE was installed and durring bootup it displays a message that CDE is enable successfully. Anybody have any ideas on how to correct? Thanks!

The problem may occur when the name server configured on HP cannot find the name of your PC.

You can solve the problem by changing the search order of DNS settings:

1. Run "sam" on the HP console.
2. Double-click "Networking and Communications".
3. Select "Name Service Switch".
4. In the "Type of Information" list, select "hosts".
5. In the "Actions" menu, select "Configure Name Service Switch...".
6. Change the search order as following:
1) /etc/hosts 2) DNS or NIS 3) DNS or NIS or none

Also, try to add the hostname of your PC in the /etc/hosts file.

Hope to solve the problem.
