Too Slow Connection to HP-UX10 (CDE)

Thursday, May 9, 2002 12:28 PM - Abu Nasser

Hi,
I am using Xmanager from Win200 Pro Platform and trying to connect to HP-UX10 (CDE). It connects but it takes more that 7 mins to password dialog box to appear and another 6 minutes to appear the desktop. Whereas , if I connect to a Red Hat Linux 7.2 station , it is fine.

Can someone help me out!!!

Thanks
Nasser

The problem might happen because some fonts doesn't exist or name server has an incorrect entry for your PC. Please try to add the hostname of your PC in the /etc/hosts file.

And also, provide us with the following information for further research:

- /var/log/Xerrors
- $HOME/.dt/errorlog
- $HOME/.dt/startlog
- /usr/dt/config/Xconfig
- /etc/dt/config/Xconfig (if it exists.)

Thanks for your cooperation.

Hi
Thanks for that support. But, it did not solve the problem. As u said, I have added my PC in the /etc/hosts file. But, about the
information u asked abt those files, those are:

1. U ASKED FOR - /var/log/Xerrors ; but, I have found Xerror file in /var/dt/Xerror and the content is:
XIO: fatal IO error 232 (Connection reset by peer) on X server Wong:0.0"
after 1601 requests (1598 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
XIO: fatal IO error 232 (Connection reset by peer) on X server "Nasser:0.0"
after 171 requests (168 known processed) with 1 events remaining.

2. $HOME/.dt/startlog : I have found this file and the content is:
--- Fri May 10 15:02:45 GMT 2002
--- /usr/dt/bin/Xsession starting...
--- Xsession started by dtlogin
--- sourcing /home/nasser/.dtprofile...
--- sourcing /usr/dt/config/Xsession.d/0010.dtpaths...
--- sourcing /usr/dt/config/Xsession.d/0020.dtims...
--- sourcing /usr/dt/config/Xsession.d/0030.dttmpdir...
--- sourcing /usr/dt/config/Xsession.d/0040.xmbind...
--- sourcing /usr/dt/config/Xsession.d/0060.srcsysenv...
--- starting /usr/dt/bin/dthello &
--- starting /usr/dt/bin/dtsearchpath -ksh
--- starting /usr/dt/bin/dtappgather &
--- execing /usr/dt/bin/dtsession...

The second portion of this mail is in the next message, since it is exceeding the limit.

Here goes the second thread of previous message:

3. - /usr/dt/config/Xconfig : The content of the file is:

/etc/dt/config/Xstartup.aa
Dtlogin.errorLogFile: /var/dt/Xerrors
Dtlogin.pidFile: /var/dt/Xpid

Dtlogin.accessFile: Xaccess
Dtlogin.servers: Xservers

Dtlogin*resources: %L/Xresources
Dtlogin*startup: Xstartup
Dtlogin*reset: Xreset
Dtlogin*setup: Xsetup

Dtlogin*session: /usr/dt/bin/Xsession

Dtlogin*failsafeClient: Xfailsafe

Dtlogin*langSetup: /usr/dt/config/Xlangsetup
Deleted all the lines started with #
4. - /etc/dt/config/Xconfig (if it exists.) : it does not exist

Thanks for ur precious time.

Sorry that we can't find any reason from the configuration files. Please check out the followings:
  1. Some locale settings require a lot of fonts and this can slow the connection. You can try another locale by clicking "Language" button in the login window. Please try "C" or "iso-8859".
  2. The hostname of your PC is registered in the name server, but the response time is slow or the lookup sequence might cause repeated tries.
  3. "/tmp" directory is full or has a limited permission for normal users.
  4. Other system resources such as memory, disk and swap space may cause such problem.
We hope this can help you.
