Xmanager exits when connected to Solaris 8 host

Tuesday, February 26, 2002 11:31 AM - Terry Duncan

Several xmanager users at our site report that the xmanager application exits for no apparent reason while connected to a Solaris 8 host. It doesn't seem to happen at regular intervals but when it happens to one it seems to happen about the same time to the others. Only those who connect using xdm/dtlogin seem to have troubles. Those just starting a window with xstart seem to be okay.

/var/dt/Xerrors reports several instances of the following message...

Warning: Null child found in argument list to unmanage

We are using version 1.3.9

Any help is much appreciated.

Please read $HOME/.dt/errorlog for more detailed messages.

If dtlogin processes are terminated due to unknown reasons, Xmanager might be closed without any error message. Please check the followings on the Solaris:

- Available memory and disk space(root and /tmp file systems).
- Periodic backup that causes file system locking.
- Other memory-intensive applications running in Solaris.

We have several XManager users who see it exit usually when their PC gets busy (when downloading email from a slow server, etc). As an experiment, I had one user download an evaluation copy of Exceed. Today we had another incident where all Xmanager clients went down but the Exceed client stayed up with no problems.

This makes me believe that the problem is not on the Solaris side but perhaps just too short of a timeout on the Xmanager side. Is there a way to change timeout values?

Exceed is much more expensive but we will pay the price to provide a stable environment.
