Clients terminate randomly [6]

Clients terminate randomly

Friday, December 28, 2001 1:28 AM - Scott

I am trying to use Xmanager 1.3.9.3 (log file) or 1.3.9.4 (about help). The clients programs are running on Redhat LINUX 7.2 system and SSH v2 is being used as the transport.

Things seem to work fine except that clients terminate after running for a random amount of time. This can be anywhere from a few seconds to an hour. I've seen failures from several different clients - xterm, Mozilla, and xfontsel, for example.

Attached is a copy of the log file after one of the failures.

The error message shows that your network subsystem(TCPIP kernel) doesn't respond to the request of Xmanager. In this case Xmanager can't communicate with the established connection regardless of transport protocol. So, the connection will be lost shortly.

Please let us know about any special network configuration on your Windows PC (VPN, dialup, firewall, network applications or anything else that can affect network status).

The windows system is a 400 MHZ DELL with 384 megs.
The LINUX system is a 200 MHZ DELL with 32 megs.
Both systems are connected via Ethernet to a 4-port hub with no other activity on the hub.

Sorry that we are hard to figure out the reason of problem with the information you provided. We think the network configuration of your PC is unstable and this kind of problem is unusual.

We suggest the following steps:

1. Try Xmanager on another PC in your office. This can give us a clue (hardware or software problem).
2. If another PC works well, please try to change your network card.
3. If that fails, try to re-install Windows.

We would appreciate your feedback.

I am having the same problem so it must not be unique to that one system. I have a home network. My wife is connecting from her Dell. There is no other network activity except for me checking e-mail on my computer using outlook.

I have the same problem connecting to one machine only.
I use a Dell Inspiron 7500, with a Xircom RealPort network card running Win2000 SP2 and the latest Xircom drv for the network card.

Whenever I connect to my HPUX 10.20 server with Xmanager (1.3.9e) after a minute or so, I get a message from Windows that my network cable is disconnected. Xmanager dies immediately.

After a few moments (30 sec) the network recovers and everything continues to function normally.
When I start Xmanager the whole process repeats itself.

I can connect fine to a HPUX 11.00 or Solaris machine.

This kind of behaviour only occurs when Xmanager is running. Windows has been reinstalled, didn't make any difference.

The suggestion of Support is probably right in saying that this is likely caused by instability of the Windows network.
What worries me is that apparently Xmanager is causing this instability in some situations.

Niels Teekens
