xterm timeout [1]
xterm timeout

When I open an xterm session on my WinNT machine to an AIX UNIX server my session closes after 30 minutes of inactivity. This really bites when you are working on a file and get caught up in other activities. Is this timeout set on the UNIX server or is it at the network router?

In most cases the session timed out due to a firewall or a NAT gateway system. Xstart with SSH protocol can send keep alive messages to the remote Unix but Telnet or other protocols don't support the keep alive feature. Optionally, you can increase the timeout time for inactive sessions in the firewall.
