Problems related to Xmanager 1.3.9 and Redhat 8.0

Friday, May 16, 2003 11:42 PM - james_tan79

I am evaluating Xmanager 1.3.9 on W2K profession, connecting to RH 8.0 using KDM. I have several issues.

a) Firstly, i am using multiple windows mode, and the KDE desktop's taskbar is blocked by W2K taskbar. I hope there is a way such that the KDE desktop can fit nicely into the W2K desktop without blocking the W2K taskbar.
b) Secondly, I like to use konsole. However, funny characters will appear. I now resorting to xterm. Out of curiosity how can I remove the funny characters...
c) I have read that xmanager 1.3.9 supports ssh, is it possible to run xdmcp over ssh so that my x-session is secure ? And how do i do it ?
d) With regard to c), would there be any slowness etc ?
e) Any options that I should disable/enable in Xconfig so that running a x-session on W2K would be as good or slightly worst than on the RH 8.0 PC without sacrificing visual satisfaction...
f) Using Xmanager broadcast query, I can see my RH 8.0 listed in the menu. Due to security reason, how can I configure RH 8.0 such that it supports xdmcp in stealth mode, so that my colleagues etc will not know i have a xdmcp service running on my RH 8.0
g) Lastly, is it possible to drag a file from one desktop to another... ?

thanks

Here are our answers to your questions:

a) KDE desktop's taskbar is not movable, so that some users move Windows taskbar to another side. Currently we don't have a clear solution to the problem.

b) For the funny characters of konsole, you can change the fonts to "fixed" in the konsole menu. If the problem persists, please provide us with a screenshot of the konsole window.

c) XDMCP connection is not possible over ssh protocol. Instead, you can run a "startkde" in the xterm window to get the KDE desktop.

d) KDE desktop might be a little slowed but it doesn't affect overall performance.

e) There is no options in Xconfig to boost the performance. If possible, upgrade your network interface to support 100M bandwidth. By changing font configuration of KDE, you could get better performance.

f) You can edit /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess file to limit accesses from unauthorized users. For more details, read Xaccess file.

g) A drag from one desktop to another is not possible currently. It is the problem of KDE, not Xmanager.

We hope this can help you.

Hi,

a) KDE desktop's taskbar can be moved. But it is important to find out where to put the mouse point to move it.
It is acting like MS windows task bar. Just give it a try. :)

b) You can change fonts for 'Konsole' at menu of Konsole.
'setting -> font -> custom'

Bye.
