Problems when using dump/restore from Xmanager [7]

I seem to have a rather strange problem when using Xmanager 1.3.9

I use this to connect to my backup server running Redhat 8.0 and am getting some strang hangups when using the dump/restore command to a SCSI sony AIT tape drive. All works well from the console of the machine but when I try to perform backup or restore commands from Xmanager the system hangs. All the windows disappear and I am unable to either telnet in or even ping the machine. It will not recover and I have to reboot the machine.

Any Ideas !!!!!

Xmanager working as only an X server does not affect the backup procedure unless it needs to access the X window system. Please test the same backup procedure using a terminal emulator such as Telnet.

For further support, please provide us with more detailed steps you followed.

I have performed the same test using a telnet connection and everything works fine.

Exactly what information would you require?

I am using the unix dump & restore commands from the command line as follows

"dump 0 "

the default tape device being /dev/st0 (sony AIT 100/260 Gbyte drive)

where firename is a large dump file of around 35Gbytes (I have tried smaller files as well)

the file resides on a raid 0 scsi disk array of 1Tbyte, this array is controlled from a Rocket Raid 404 card.

The dump/restore command seems to fail because the shell environment settings are different when connected through Xmanager.

Please let us know the detailed connection steps you followed. For example:

1. Xstart with TELNET.
2. Execution Command:
xterm -ls -display $DISPLAY
3. dump/restore command at the xterm prompt.

According to the protocol you selected in Xstart and the command option for the xterm, shell environment may be different than that of telnet.

The Xmanager command (from a shortcut) is:-

"C:\Program Files\Xmanager1.3.9\Xmanager.exe" -multi rmpdfh5

I have used 2 Telnet programs as a test..

1) Hyperterminal 6.3 (no problems)
2) Xterm as follows:-
Xstart with Telnet
/usr/bin/X11/xterm -ls -display $DISPLAY
log in as root
the dump command is: dump 0f /dev/st0
restore command: restore -i (interactive mode)
(select files for extraction, then extract)

We think that the dump/restore problem of yours is not caused by Xmanager, but affected by the various kinds of environment variables set on login using Xmanager. This problem is suspected as a bug of dump/restore commands in Red Hat Linux and can be hardly solved from Xmanager side.

If there is a different Linux system with same hardware installed as your RH Linux, the same command can be tested. From the test using our systems, there is no dump/restore problem.

Needless to say that Xmanager has a possibility to cause this trouble, but the chance is very small.

I suppose its something I will just have to live with at the moment as its no great deal to use Telnet when I am performing a dump or restore.
