XManager font server causes very slow windows [5]

XManager font server causes very slow windows

Tuesday, October 14, 2003 6:38 AM - Simon

I'm using the newest XManager 1.3.9.

When I enable the font server to my Redhat 9 system, and connect via Windows XP, some applications that XManager does not come with a correct font, display very nice with the font server set up remotely, but closing those windows, causes XManager to lock temporarily, the hour glass in windows shows up (not on the linux box) and windows says XManager is not responding, then about 30-60 seconds later, it resumes ok, but if I open that application again, and close the window, it does the same thing, when it closes on redhat, XManager temporarily locks up.

When I disable font server, everything is fine, but fonts are displayed in the application very poorly. I tried your mono font install package, still no go. I'm not sure what font is missing because the .log file doesn't even say any errors.

Could anyone help please?

In some situation the font server may not function properly. It's better to install the required fonts in Xmanager.

RedHat 9 doesn't require addtional font pack for most applications. Please let us know the application that displays fonts poorly. Also, a screenshot would be helpful to solve the problem.

nmapfe in Redhat 9.0 is an example of an app with a strange font appearence.

If a font server is added the font is OK.

Even if XManager 1.3.9 is configured to not use substitute fonts and report font errors, no errors appear.

I've tried converting the Redhat 9 *.pcf.gz files to unix "compress" file (gunzipping then recompressing with "compress") and installing locally for every pcf font I could find, but this has no effect.

I also installed every ISO font pack from your download page, but that didn't help.

The nmapfe requires the following font:

-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-120-75-75-p-67-iso10646-1

The file name is "helvR12.pcf.gz" on Linux. You can ungzip it to "helvR12.pcf" and then download it as binary format. You can create a new folder (e.g.: iso10646-1) below "C:\Program Files\Xmanager1.3.9\Fonts". Put the font in the new folder. And run "C:\Program Files\Xmanager1.3.9\mkfntdir.exe ." on the new folder. A "fonts.dir" file is created. Now, run Xconfig and add the new folder into the list.

Hope this can help you.

Thanks for that, it worked OK.

To find out which font the app used, what did you do? Did you have to look at the source code, is there some X utility that can determine it?

Depending on the system locale X applications require a different encoding for the corresponding font. For the "en_GB.UTF8" locale, nmapfe tries to open "iso10646-1" fonts. If it is missing in Xmanager, the application tries again to open "iso8859-1", but the font has an incorrect width and pitch.

We will prepare the "iso10646-1" fonts as an installable package soon.
