getting a remote xterm

I had a problem connecting to a remote machine. However, I got the answer from the website
http://www.scd.ucar.edu/docs/ssh/guide/node29.html
Apparently, to get an off network xterm, you should log in using ssh and leave out the DISPLAY variable since ssh will adjust it accordingly.
