HP-UX XDMCP Remote desktop problem
Monday, October 9, 2006 9:13 PM - Miles
Hi,
I am running a HP-UX bow and was running Exceed succesfully for a remote desktop.
We are moving now to Xmanager2, but cannot get a connection.
When using a XDM Query connection method, the screen pops up, but no Login GUI is sent, just a blak gray screen.
I have tried various ports, with my latest being port 7000, any additional tips you can give me? I have trolled through your forum's and FAQ's, but can;t find any assistance.
Many thanks,
Miles

First, check if XDM is running on HP-UX.
If it is, then open incoming UDP 177 port on HP-UX.

Hi,
Thanks for that assistance, unfortunately it didn't help.
The Dtlogin process was running and the XDM file had CHOOSER BROADCAST in it (un-commented)
I tried various port numbrs and made sure my firewall was of, but I still just get a blak gray screen when atmpting to run/open the XDMCP sesion I created with xManager 2
thx,
miles

Hello
It seems your Xmanager session is setup to use a wrong port number. Usually X Window uses UDP 177 port unless you configured it otherwise. Try using the defualt UDP 177 port instead.
Can you Telnet or SSH to your server?

hey Edward,
Many thanks for the reply.
To answer some of your question, I tried the default port number (177) and various others I found in HP documentation I thought I'd try.
Telnet and SSH sessions to the box over the LAN work perfectly, its just getting the GUI back from the HP box to xManager2 that has me going mad
Any further idea's as to what I can do to not just have this blank gray screen come up when I try to run the XDM Query session (No login screen at all, just blank gray screen with mouse cursor being a cross)
thanks,
miles

/var/dt/Xerrors file on HP would help you find the reason of the problem.

All your log files show that you did not use UDP 177. Please make a log file using UDP 177. We may find some information that can help us solve your problem.
To retrive the log file from the running session, first, change the Xmanager session to use UDP 177 port and start the session. Right click on the Xmanager title bar. In the menu, Click log and then, file. When notepad containing log opens up, save it to a file and attach it to your next posting.
Thank you for your cooperation.
