monitor physical size detection [5]

Hi,

I've got incorrect monitor size reported by xdpyinfo with Xmanager (289x209 mm instead of actual size 360x260 mm). This results in incorrect DPI setting (90x90 instead of 75x75). Fonts and icons are big and ugly.

I guess it may be because no monitor driver is installed. I've got ridiculous monitor for which I cannot find a driver, so in device manager it is listed as plain "Plug and Play Monitor".

Where Xmanager does take monitor size from?
Is it possible to override monitor dimensions?

You can change the dimension in Xconfig. Please follow the instruction below:

1. Open Xconfig.
2. Double-click on Default Profile.
RESULT: Default Profile Properties dialog box opens up.
3. Click Setup in the Window Mode area.
4. Click the Single Window Mode tab.
5. Select a desired resolution size in Window Size.
6. Click OK.

Resolution cannot be changed in the current version. However, font and icon size are rarely related to resolution. Please make sure if this problem does not occur in console.

1. Screenshot of the problem.
2. Name/version of the remote server.

I tried both multiple window mode and single window mode.
In single window mode, it is possible to set root window size in pixels.
I tried several values. The problem still remains,
regardless of window size in pixels.

First, I provide details about my typical use of X server.
I'm using Xmanager Enterprise 2.1 (Build 0013).
My local computer is under control of Windows2000 sp4.
In my local network, there is another computer
running Gentoo linux 2.6.14-gentoo-r5
with xorg 6.8.2-r6 and kde 3.4.3.
Linux host is running in graphical mode (k desktop manager).
What I usualy do:
1. Run X server on windows host: Xmanager-passive
2. From linux host, run a program specifying windows X display:
klickety -display :0.0 &
3. The program shows its window on windows host, and I work with it.
I prefere multiwindow mode in Xmanager, so that
window borders are provided by Xmanager while program
draws inside the window area.
However, I tried single window mode as well,
and the problem still remains in all cases.

Before trying Netsarang Xmanager, I was using Cygwin
exactly in the same manner as described above.

Here are screenshots and relevant xdpyinfo output
made using Xmanager and Cygwin.

Xmanager xdpyinfo output:

resolution: 90x90 dots per inch

Cygwin xdpyinfo output:

Actual visible monitor dimensions (measured with ruler) are 360x260 mm.

What I learned looking at screenshots:

* window decorations (green line with window title) are
the same as expected (this is multiwindow mode, and X manager provides it).

* Widgets without text (like lcd-style blocks counter) are of the same size.

* Menu text differs. This is the problem we're trying to solve.

Within kde environment on linux host, the screenshot and xdpyinfo output
are exactly the same as those produced by Cygwin.

I modified font size on linux host (using kde control center).
Then, the fonts became too small within kde environment on linux host
(and when using cygwin as well), but Xmanager produced fonts of the size required.

Thus, I concluded that large fonts with Xmanager are the result of different DPI settings in Xmanager.

We have tested Klickety on our Red Hat machine but could not duplicate the problem. Please see an attached image file for our result. We are currently trying to setup a Gentoo linux testing machine. Meanwhile, try the following:

Since this problem may occur when an application is using fontset that is not in Xmanager, using font server may fix your problem. To use font server, follow the instruction in Xmanager FAQ # 14.

No X font server that is listening for TCP connections is available on the linux machine I mentioned in the previous message.

So, I tried the following:
I changed default menu font on linux machine to "fixed", since this font is definitely among fonts supplied by xmanager. Thus I made sure that no additional X font server is required.

The problem persists even with this standard font, so probably external X font server won't help either.

I believe the problem is in the way of determining monitor physical dimensions. The xdpyinfo program displays X server settings and can be used to check if the monitor dimensions are set to correct values or not.

I tried different X servers, and while the most of them stick to values that are close to correct dimensions (which results in DPI 70x70, 72x72, 71x72), some other, including X manager, use dimensions that are pretty far from reality, which results in DPI 90x90 and finally results in the problem with different font size. All graphical elements except for fonts are measured in pixels and thus do not depend on DPI settings.

We are currently testing this problem. Please check back soon for a solution.
