WIndows 10 Bash (WSL) with XShell [7]

WIndows 10 Bash (WSL) with XShell

Saturday, November 19, 2016 11:44 AM - Jeremy Hall

Windows 10 new command "bash" (C:\Windows\System32\bash.exe) does not work in XShell. I expected this to work seamlessly since XShell 5 can "Run Windows commands", and actually runs a few that I have used without issues. See further background below:

As you may know, the newer Windows 10 update incorporates access to a new developers feature called Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Windows had partnered with Canonical to integrate the bash shell directly, also allowing access to Ubuntu repositories, software etc.

This is a great feature and means we now have access to the power of linux (bash, gnu commands and tools) "natively" inside windows without need for VM or cygwin.

This simple integration provides a commandline only interface to the linux subsystem and can be started via the 'bash' command on the windows commandline, or searching for the bash program.

The issue is I cant seem to start the bash command within the XShell local shell, which I found strange since XShell 5 seemed to support many external windows commanline tools and commands.

Previously, I would have requested cygwin shell front-end integration into XSHell (without having to host ssh server), now all that is required is for XShell to support this external windows commandline tool via its local shell and all will be well!

Please advise if this is possible, or why I might be having issues with it.

Program Ver. : Xshell 5

Hey Jeremy,

Unfortunately, Xshell cannot take bash environments in its terminal at this time. However, we do have plans to improve Xshell's local shell in the next version!

Hello Support,

Do you have any update on this feature? You said that an improvement to the local shell is coming but when?

I'm now using the Bash on Ubuntu on Windows feature and I have to say it's great other than the poor terminal interface. Would love to use this in Xshell.

If this is not going to arrive anytime soon then I'll look around for something to fill the gap.

Thanks,
Simon

I assure you we are working on it, but an improving on the local shell will take some time. Currently there is no timetable in place. Appreciate your patience.

Any news about bash integration?
I can see that xshell 6 beta release has been announced but without bash support yet.
Are you planning this feature in the final release at least?

So sad Xshell doesn't allow local bash on windows. Please prioritize this!

We wrote up a guide on how to SSH into the local system. We recommend you do this as as an alternative to direct bash from the Local Shell.
