Connecting through Microsoft Proxy Server [3]

Hello all. I'm trying to connect to my X server through a Microsoft proxy server. I've put in the tcp:6000 incoming with UDP:512-514 outgoing and also the UDP:117 outgoing into the winsock properties. I'm still getting a can not connect to XDMCP error.

The XServer only has one eth0 with an internet address and a second computer I have at home (win2k) with it own internet address can connect so I'm assuming its because of the proxy server I have here at work that is not allowing the connection.

If the proxy server is a firewall and your PC has a private IP address, you cannot connect to the remote Unix using XDMCP method.
If this is not the case, please open incoming TCP ports for 6000 ~ 6010 and outgoing UDP 177.

More information on your network configuration would be very helpful.

Hello. Well we have made a few changes to our network in the past week but here are our current settings. We have a MS proxy server that proxies our office. We now have a Linux/IPTables firewall. The firewall is configured so that if the connect request comes from inside our network it will allow the response back. My ip on the machine I'm tring to connect from my Linux box is in the 192 range (private). The machine I'm connecting to has a public IP.

Inside a firewall, XDMCP connection to the external Linux is not possible. However, if your Linux version is 2.1.x, you can install XDMCP Masquerading Module in your firewall system. You can get it at:

/ip_masq/ip_masq1.html

Instead of using XDMCP, we recommend you to use Xstart with SSH protocol. It can pass through the firewall and launch xterm or other X applications easily. For more information on SSH protocol, please visit at:
