when a server machine does not echo backspace signal(cursor one space left and delete), you can see only ^? characters after backspace key strokes. In this case characters are actually deleted.
$ls -l^?^?
If you type ls command like above, the server will perform a corrected 'ls ' command.
Using descructive backspace option, Backspace key forces to delete characters on screen.
$ls -l^?^?
