recovering session password [6]

recovering session password

Wednesday, February 13, 2013 9:10 AM - Chris Anspach

Is there anyway to go find the Connection; Authentication; password that I have set in my session?

I can connect to the server - no problem, but when I open a session separately via any method - the password I'm trying to use is not working, so my team mates can't log in either. I figure if I can see what I have it set as within Xshell, it would help tremendously. Thx!

Program Ver. : Xshell 4

You can find the session's connection information and authentication method in Sessions Properties. Password is encrypted and it cannot be retrieved by us or other users using different computers. This is a security feature of Xshell.

If the problem persist, please let us know the following:

1. Detailed steps to reproduce problem
2. Screenshots of problem
3. Windows version
4. Remote host name/version

I have a password of one of our servers on my machine. My collegue is working and i cannot access the servers till one month.

I need to give them the password but i cannot remember since i saved it on my machine a long time ago.

How do I get the password?

I cannot change it since many services are also using the same password which we cannot tell how many.

Please help

We cannot help you retrieving password. All passwords are securely encrypted. You should contact the system admin to reset your password.

This doesn't make sense.
Even if the password is encrypted and stored on the machine running XShell, SSH interactive login requires the SSH client to know the plaintext password, which is tunneled over an encrypted connection.

This means the XShell app is able to decrypt the stored password on the fly. It's a different matter that they won't tell you how they do it. Security by obscurity.

Your best bet is to run a modified version of OpenSSH on the server(if you can) - which logs the password in syslog. See here:

In order to export the session password, you'll need to use the session export function of the File Menu and make sure to select the "Export Password" check box.
