"Too many authentication failures"
Wednesday, October 15, 2008 4:25 PM - Ivan Vanyushkin
I use public key auth, and I have enabled Xagent. When I connect some of servers, I can't connect and got error message from Xshell:
"The server sent a disconnect packet.
Too many authentication failures for root (code: 2)"
I suppose Xshell & Xagent try all the keys from my keyring on server, so default limit of public key attempts in OpenSSHd is reached. Why all keys are tried, when I've selected only one in "Authentification" setting, it is not used?
If it helps you, the similar problem with OpenSSH -> OpenSSHd is solved by OpenSSH settings: IdentityFile and IdentitiesOnly, PreferredAuthentications. ( http://groups.google.com/group/comp.security.ssh/browse_thread/thread/81652c5ecded6911/9e69a29b6ab92e86 )
I'd like to have solution to use only single key via Xagent that I have specified in connection settings.
Program Ver. : Xshell 3.0

Thank you for the report. We have successfully duplicated the problem and the fix will be included in the future releases.

Thank you, I'll look forward it.
The bug touches password functions and also security (all keys, even other's, are used on each server), so I expect you'll fix it fast.

Hi-
Was this ever fixed or is there a way to limit what keys are sent...eg -o IdentitiesOnly=yes ?
