Slow XDMCP connection [6]
Slow XDMCP connection
Monday, February 4, 2008 8:59 PM - Torsten
Hello!
I am using Xmanager with xdmcp to log-on my linux box (using kde and graphical applications there). I have had Fedora-7, 32-bit and it was just running fine. Now I updated to Fedora-8, 64-bit and it is still running -- but somewhat slower. Native applications (eg Firefox, Thunderbird) run just a bit slower. But Java (Eclipse 3.3) is runnting very slow. Especially resze operations as maximize/minimize need 5+ seconds.
I have tried quiete a bit with different settings, X-Servers, updates but there is no effect.
Is there anyting you know to help me ?
Thanks,
Torsten.

I was using Fedora 8 test release and it was running dreadfully slow. I am now using Fedora 8 official release and Eclipse 3.3, the same configuration as you are, and everything runs fine.
Perhaps you can test if Eclipse runs OK on console.

Thanks for the reply ... Eclipse does run fine on console. But having several users working with the machine, we need remote X-login ;-).

When we tested Fedora 8 on Xmanager, it was running a bit faster than Fedora 7 if not the same. Nonetheless, we will test this problem again and get back to you with an answer by next week.
Meanwhile, please try upgrading Xmanager to the latest release and see if the problem persists.
Also, if you can share us how we can duplicate the problem, it would help us greatly.
Thank you.

Thanks for your help.... I was using Xmanager 3 enterprise. Fedora 8 64-bit was just out of the box (and enabled XDMCP of course)
By the way: When testing I found a huge difference depending on the application used. Most apps run slower, but one can still use it. Just Eclipse 3.3 does run a lot slower, eg re-size of a window takes 5 seconds.
I also found out when you change the DISPLAY variable on the console from :0 to localhost:0 it will also run slow. This may indicate a problem within the network-code of X .

Thank you for the information.
We will test this with the exact configuration you have gave us.
Also, we are assuming that your Fedora 7 and 8 machines have about the same hardware specification.
Please let us know if you find any new information.

We have finished testing Fedora 8 on Xmanager but the Eclipse problem did not occur. However, we have notice Fedora 8 uses more resource than Fedora 7 making it seems like Xmanager is running slower than the previous Fedora versions. But, this is not the case.
For the Eclipse problem, I can recommend you try using the same JVM version with the one installed on Fedora 7 and configuring Eclipse to use this JVM. (It has been reported that Eclipse runs noticeably faster on Sun's JVM.)
