[feature request] Add connection properties to folders [12]

Hello,
I think folders should have connection properties.
That would be very useful to have the possibility to attribute different properties to each folders.
Sessions defined in a folders would inherit the connections properties like key; user, port forwarding....
Of course properties could be overridden in session definition or in child folders.
That would makes the sessions tree a kind of object database.

Some possibly resulting new features :
- The root folder would set the default parameters.
- One could have a little mark on the folder icon to show that it has customized properties.
- inherited properties would be shown with a different color
- At the xshell prompt "ssh -f <folder name> user@servername" would open a connection with the given folder properties.

I have not seen this feature in any other ssh client. Maybe that would add a new competitive advantage. If looks silly please tell me.

In the new version, you will be able to batch edit settings for multiple sessions through the Session Properties dialog box.

Folder sounds like an interesting idea but my concern is that folder for most people is just folder. It is hard to imagine there is any properties applied to it. We will test out this option but not sure if it can actually make it to the final product.

Thank you for your answer. I agree that a folder may not be the best item.

A colleague just told me that he saw such feature on two different Windows terminal-server clients, he only remembers one, multidex (http://www.syvik.com/multidesk/ ). Apparently in that tool the folders are named connection groups and have a different icon.

One thing that could benefit of connection group is when servers are many; it would make no sense to have a folder with >100 entries. On such sites connection are made when incident occurs; sometime some servers are connected only once a year. Here what matters is to have the proper connection attributes already set.
One can imagine to have a connection group containing the main servers, the other server would be connected by selecting the connection group directly (maybe a double click).
On Xshell 4 the way to do that is to create a dummy connection with a fake server name but it is just a workaround.

Looks like a great way to apply the same settings for included sessions. We will consider such feature in the feature addition.

Xshell session is definitely more complicated then this and different type of sessions require different set of properties. Inheriting from the parent can be both good or bad depending on users preference. But, we will have all options open when implementing such feature.
