Midnight Commander line drawing [1]

Just trying out Xshell. Like it a lot but there is an annoying problem with line drawing in Midnight Commander.
The main MC screen lines draw just fine, but all the "pop ups" display boxes instead of lines.

In putty, this is not a problem as long as two settings are correct:
* utf8
* "use unicode line drawing code points" (under Window->Translation)

So... is there a way to get line drawing to work this way in xshell?

Actually, I think I just solved this myself mostly: turns out it makes a difference what font you're using. Deja Vu Sans Mono dosn't handle line drawing correctly in Xshell.
It works fine in PuTTY (and KiTTY) but this again is because of the "use Unicode line drawing code points" I'm pretty sure.
Would be a nice option to have in Xshell since it doesn't matter then what font you use... and the lines also look nicer.
