Xmanager can not login Solaris 10 [9]

Just installed Solaris 10 on 2 servers. One is SunFire 880, another is SunFire 4800.

We tried Xmanager 2.0 and 1.3.9.

There is a Graphic card in SF880. So Xmanager works fine.

In SF4800, there is no Graphic card. Xmanager can not work after a flash. The window then disappears.

We used a remedy, adding IP address of PC in the server's /etc/hosts file. This make the Xmanager works. But it is not reasonable. If there are lots of people wanna connect the server. Just imagine how hard the system administrator need to do. He or she must maintain lots of clients' ip address. If DHCP is used, that will make the work worse.

Could you guys here can provide a solution to solve the problem?

The cause of your problem is irrespective of physical installation of a graphic card. The problem is resided in the DNS server.

When you use Xmanager to connect to the remote server, the dtlogin process running on the server tries to obtain the information of your PC from the registered DNS server. If the DNS server sends wrong information, the connection cannot be made. Please try to update the PC's address information at the DNS server. Or, configure the DNS settings in SunFire 4800 as same as the one in SunFire 880.

Thanks for your quick response. One thing made me confused is that I did not configure the DNS in the SunFire 880 yet. But it still works. How do you explain that?

Is it mandatory for Xmanager to get PC ip address to work?

If you do not configure the DNS in the server, lookup queries would not be run and that eliminates the possibility of getting wrong information from your DNS server. And that makes Xmanager to work fine.

If there is no need to configure the DNS for your new Solaris servers, then simply don't. Everything works and no more hassle. :-)

In fact, I did not configue DNS in 2 servers at all. But the difference made me confused. SunFire 880 works and Sunfire 4800 does not work.

Now I only can use a workaround, adding the PC ip addresss in the /etc/hosts, to make it works.

So I just don't know if there is a real solution, and what is a reasonable explanation.

Compare /etc/resolv.conf from both servers. Are they looked same? Try to comment out name server fields in the one you have a problem with. That might solves your problem.

There are no /etc/resolv.conf files on the 2 servers. In our systems, we do not use DNS. So we did not configure the resolv.conf files.

From the Solaris server you have a problem with, try to do "nslookup" for your PC. First run "nslookup [IP address of PC]". Then, with the host name you get from the nslookup, run another "nslookup [hostname]" and see if you get the correct IP address of your PC from the result.

In order to help solving your problem, please provide us with the following information:

1. Debug message from dtlogin process
(To obtain the debug message, run /usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -kill and /usr/dt/bin/dtlogin -debug 1 in order.)
2. /var/dt/Xerrors, $Home/.dt/startlog, and $HOME/.dt/errorlog files in the remote server

Since the login window exit after a flash. There is no $HOME/.dt/startlog and $HOME/.dt/errorlog.
