Xmanager and VMS [12]

I would like to launch Xmanager on my PC and display ¿VMS window.

Is it possible and what is the product and version to use.

In order to connect to the VAX/VMS environment, use the Xstart program, not Xbrowser. Following is the procedure for connection to the VMS.

1. First, create an xlogin account.
2. Choose an appropriate keyboard file.
3. Install DEC fonts.
4. Connect to the xlogin account with Xstart.

Step 1: Creating a new account in VMSCreate a new account called xlogin in the VMS. This account is for Xmanager to connect, and upon the log-in, you have to install the file LOGIN.COM so that the proper X window environment can be set up. The LOGIN.COM script can be found in the Xmanager installation folder. Copy it to the xlogin account by using Xftp or other file transfer utilities.

Step 2: Changing keyboard fileBecause the keyboard of the VAX is different from that of the PC, you must change the keyboard file as shown below before running Xmanager.

1. Run Xconfig.
2. Double click Default Profile.
3. Click the Devices tab.
4. Click Keyboard Settings.
   RESULT: Keyboard Settings dialog box opens up.
5. Click Add.
   RESULT: Add Keyboard dialog box opens up.
6. Select DEC style US keyboard for 103 key (Decus.xkb)
7. Click OK.
8. Click Set As Default for the decus.xkb.
9. Save the changes and exit from Xconfig.

Step 3: Install DEC/VAX fontsYou can find DEC fonts at:

/download/main.html

Download dec.exe and run it on Windows.

Step 4: Connecting with Xstart

1. Run Xstart.
2. Create a new session and name it xlogin.
3. In the Host box, enter the IP address or host name of the VMS machine.
4. Select TELNET in the Protocol list.
5. Enter User and Password.
   Note: In general, enter xlogin for the user and the password.
6. Leave Execution Command empty.
7. Click Save.
8. Click Run.

If you follow the procedure above, you will see the XDM login window as with the UNIX system.

Is there a way to make Xmanager runnin in background mode and have the possibility to launch the create/term command to have a new decterm appearing on the desktop ?

To run Xmanager in background, try using Xmanager in passive mode. Please find Xmanager - Passive in the Xmanager Program menu.

And, to launch terminal windows on the desktop, you can use Xstart. This allows you to run individual X application without logging into the remote desktop environment.

I did create an account under VMS, on a VAXStation.
I did all the steps and when I launch XStart, or Xmanager passive, I have the lovely Digital background with the authentication box.
I tried to deinstal Xmanager, to delete all the profiles, this F¿$^¿ box still appear.
It worked yesterday at the beginning....
I had to do a small demo to the responsible this afternoon, but.....
I did a good job...... :-(

All I wanted to do in fact was to have the Xmanager icon at the bottom of my screen, and the possibility to define displays from any VMS machine, to my PC, and launch create/term, or decw$calendar and so on .

The reboot of the VaxStation fixed the problem.

Before that I tried to stop DECWindows process but .. same trouble.

Still have to fix the QWERTY keyboard in the DECterms ...but I have some ideas.

I am using the demo of Xmanager available on your website as of 4/15/2009. I am running it on windows XP and attempting to connect to an OpenVMS server. Following the directions here does not work. After clicking "run" the Xrcmd:connection status window appears. Some text is displayed (eg parsing password prompt) but mostly it changes too fast to read. This dialog box then disappears and i am left with nothing. There is no terminal window, no error messages, not log file that I can find... nothing. I have no connection to the OpenVMS server and no idea what, if anything, went wrong.

Any suggestions or updates from this 4-year-old "how to" list?

edit - if it helps, i'm using OpenVMS version 8.3
and i have no problem at all running Xming and putty to achieve what Xmanager intends to do.

To further analyze this problem, please send us the following information:

1. All reply messages in the 'Xrcmd: Reply message' dialog box. To show this message, select the Show reply messages option on Xstart.

2. How are you connecting to the server using Xming and Putty?

After turning on the "show reply messages" i see that I am being logged in to the OpenVMS server, but I just don't get any kind of terminal window. I assumed that if i uas using a telnet or ssh protocol to connect that i would automatically get a terminal after passing my userid/password. not so.

i wrote a script to create and detach a terminal back to my windows computer, so now i get a ternimal when i run Xstart.

With Xming i simply double click xming to start it, run Xlaunch to configure it, and then run putty. simple. i guess my problem was that your Xstart takes all the same inputs as putty, but doesn't give any terminal (as putty does). Am I missing something? Sorry, I'm just testing your product (and several others) and haven't had time to troubleshoot much.

Let me see if you are on the same page. I understand that you are trying to open a terminal (text-based) to VMS just like would on Putty. If this is the case, you should use Xshell. Xshell is a free for home/school terminal emulator that lets you access VMS via SSH or Telnet.

If I am not on the same page with you, could you show us the screenshot of Xming + Putty configuration?

As for a sidenote, Xmanager lets you access the remote GUI applications. For instance, you would use Xmanager if you are trying to open the full desktop of the remote VMS machine.

Of course I'm using a GUI application. For a terminal I can just use putty. No need to buy anything (i'm not a student).

I posted a detailed reply which seems to have been deleted...

Although few people use VMS, it might be worth giving them access to information on how to get your product working with their systems. But feel free to delete my other posts, too. I got it working without your help.
