Please store all settings in one place [10]

Please store all settings in one place

Friday, June 6, 2008 11:12 AM - Dan Dascalescu

Right now, XShell stores settings in different places:
  • user keys are stored in the Registry
  • sessions are stored in %APPDATA%\NetSarang\XShell\Sessions
  • proxy definitions are stored in the Registry
  • the compose bar history is stored in XShell.exe's directory
  • color schemes are stored in the registry
Storing proxy passwords (even encrypted) in the Registry is not secure. Storing session definitions in a hardcoded path is also not secure. Right now I have to work around this by authenticating with public keys stored on a secure TrueCrypt virtual disk.

Can XShell please store all settings in one user-configurable directory, which the user can define to be in a secure location, such as a TrueCrypt drive?

This would also allow XShell to become a portable application.

Thank you,
Dan Dascalescu

Program Ver. : Xshell 3.0

Security is definately one of our primary concern. Thank you for sharing your idea and we will most certainly try doing this in our future edition.

Thank you for sharing your idea.

It's been almost a year since this feature request.

Any updates?

This is quite a complicated feature that requires extensive testing. We will be including this feature in the next major release (scheduled for release later this year).

We try to incorporate as many features as we can. However, like any other software company, we need to set priorities and pick&choose what we will add in milestones. I can assure you this feature is on our list and will be part of Xshell in the future.

I hope you understand.

About priority: if you do not understand that this is an absolutely TOP priority feature then you fail your job - an ssh client that distributes sensitive information into x different places around is of NO USE. So your user interface can be as beautiful as anything, but without being able to define ONE SINGLE directory where my sensitive information is saved the whole software is not usable.

A portable version is even better.

Please reconsider your priorities and listen to the experienced admins that are talking here, thanks.
