Running multiple X desktops with Xmanager

User interface of Xmanager is intuitive. In Xmanager, you can browse and connect to remote Unix/Linux machines through X Display Manager Control Protocol (XDMCP). 

Xmanager supports multiple XDMCP sessions simultaneously. Each XDMCP sessions can be configured to to have different settings by using the Xconfig profiles. This allows fine tuning of Xmanager to meet users' needs. 

Xmanager assigns a display number for each XDMCP session automatically based on the value defined in the Xconfig profile. Although, 0 is set for its default display number, users can manually assign a number from Xconfig. Display number is increased by one for every new session created. 

To start multiple XDMCP sessions

1. First, run Xmanager. Xmanager lists all connectable hosts as shown below.
   
   

   Note

   By default, Xmanager searches for all Linux/Unix hosts in the same local network. If some hosts are outside the local network, add the hosts in the Options dialog box. You can access this menu by selecting the Tools, and then Options. 

   
   In case that some hosts in the local network may not be listed in Xmanager, see the Troubleshooting section below.
   
   

2. Double click a host name to start the first session, and double click another host name to start additional session. By simple clicking inside Xmanager, you can open multiple XDMCP sessions. 
   
   If you have any problem connecting to the remote host, see the Troubleshooting section below.

Troubleshooting

When a Linux/Unix host is not listed in the Xmanager window: Please check the followings:

1. Is xdm (or dtlogin, kdm, gdm) running in the remote host?
2. Is the remote host in the same network with your PC?

3. Is there any firewall-like program running between the two machines?

When Xmanager fails to connect to the listed host: When the remote host is found in the Xmanager window but the connection cannot be established, please check the followings:

1. Is there any firewall-like program running between the two machines?
2. Is the hostname of your PC registered correctly in the name server?
