How can I allow Xmanager in the Windows Firewall to ensure remote connections can be made with Xmanager?

RESOLUTION

Xmanager is a PC X server, and needs to connect from a remote Unix/Linux server to a PC through TCP port 6000. Depending on the number of Xmanager sessions(Xmanager.exe processes), the port increases sequentially to occupy additional ports such as 6001, 6002, etc.

Microsoft Windows has its own firewall system. It controls connections by port units, but mainly by program units. If the Windows Firewall must be operational while using Xmanager, Xmanager must be able to be connected to from outside.

When Xmanager is installed, Xmanager is automatically registered in the firewall. Regardless, there may be cases when Xmanager cannot be used through a user's mistake or an error in the Windows Firewall.

In this case, you need to initialize all Xmanager-related items in the firewall list and ensure that they are allowed by the firewall.


  1. In Windows, press the Win+R keys and type 'firewall.cpl' to run the Window Defender Firewall program.
    In Windows Defender Firewall, select 'Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off'.


  2. Make sure the settings state is set to 'Notify me when Windows Defender Firewall blocks a new app'.


  3. Return to the Window Defender Firewall program and select 'Advanced Settings' to launch the 'Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security' program.


  4. Select 'Inbound Rules'

  5. Delete all Xmanager-related items from the 'Inbound Rules' list. Also delete anything related to Xsound.

    Item names may be slightly different depending on the Xmanager version. Delete all of the above items. They will all be re-registered in the following steps.

  6. Close all running Xmanager instances, and run Xmanager again. Try connecting to the Unix/Linux server.
    Select 'Allow access' in the warning window asking whether or not to allow Xmanager.


    Make the same choice for Xsound.
