How to start CDE, KDE and Gnome using Xstart
INTRODUCTION
This article explains how to run CDE, KDE and Gnome using a simple X application launcher, Xstart. This method can be used when XDMCP connection fails due to network configuration, filewall policies or any other reasons.
*This article requires remote server configuration. Administrator previlage may be required.
INFORMATION
First, enter one of the following command in the Execution Command field on Xstart.
Display Manager | Execution Command |
CDE | DISPLAY=$DISPLAY; /usr/dt/bin/Xsession |
GNOME | /usr/bin/gnome-session --display $DISPLAY |
KDE | DISPLAY=$DISPLAY; /usr/bin/startkde |
xdm (X window system default) | DISPLAY=$DISPLAY; /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession |
Also, to run CDE, GNOME or KDE from Xstart, use 'Single Window Mode' and disable the 'Terminate at reset' option (Instruction for each option can be found on the bottom of this page). To set these options, follow the instruction below:
- Open Xstart.
- Select the session you want to run.
- Click the Advanced button.
- In the Server Profile section, click the Configure button.
Result: Properties dialog box opens. - Select the 'Single Window Mode' option from the Window Mode section.
- Uncheck the 'Terminate at reset' option
