Refreshing the Gnome Desktop

Refreshing the Gnome Desktop

When using Xmanager in single window mode (e.g. XDMCP sessions), when maximizing or resizing a window, the remote desktop is readjusted to fit Xmanager’s window size. Xmanager accomplishes this using the X extension, RandR.

However, certain remote desktop managers do not support RandR or do not respond to Xmanager’s window resizing. Thus you may find yourself in a situation where the remote desktop screen and Xmanager’s window are mismatched in size. In this case, the desktop manager needs to be refreshed and you can do so by accessing the desktop’s context menu. This option, however, is not available in Gnome desktop.

If a Gnome desktop and Xmanager window are mismatched, you’ll need to take the following actions to refresh the screen:

  • Press Alt+F2 on the desktop to open the command execution dialog box. Then execute the 'r' or 'restart' command.

  • Alternatively, you can run the following command in a terminal program.

    $ gnome-shell --replace & disown
