If you are using Ubuntu 18.04, you may have noticed that when running gnome-terminal using Xstart or Xshell's X11 tunnelling, it does not open in Xmanager on the PC but instead opens on the Linux console screen.
This is because when gnome-terminal attempts to connect to Xmanager, it determines that the necesssary conditions are not met. It then instead connects to a desktop screen where condititions are met. This can be the locol console or even another Xmanager screen which is connected via XDMCP.
To remedy this, use the following command to bypass the condition check and to open the screen on the current display.
$ gnome-terminal --disable-factory
Program Version: Xmanager 6
Connection Method: Xstart connection
