How can I edit multiple session files simultaneously?

Xshell has the ability to change multiple session files at once. There are two ways you can achieve this.

  • Edit the desired session files in the Session dialog box or Session Manager by multi-selecting.

  • Edit folders in the Session Manager and have the sessions within the folder inherit its properties.

Editing Sessions Using Multi-Select

How to select multiple sessions

  • Mouse drag: Drag the mouse in an empty space of the session manager or session dialog box

  • Shift mouse click: First select a session and then shift click another session. All sessions between these two sessions will be selected.

  • Ctrl mouse click: Select sessions individually.

Modify session information

  1. Right-click on one of the selected session files and select Properties from the session context menu.

  2. Modify the necessary information in the ‘Properties of multiple sessions' dialog box.
Values of '###’ indicates that the corresponding value in the selected session files are different. Any changes made here will apply to all selected sessions.

  3. Click OK to apply the changes.

Edit Folders to Apply Changes to All of its Sessions

Xshell 7 includes an Inheritable Session Properties feature that allows you to create folders in the Session Manager to act as property templates for new and existing session files.

In the image above, you’ll notice the parent folder ‘All Sessions’ which includes all of your sub folders and sessions. Right click and go to properties. Make any changes, such as Username and Password in the Authentication section. Click OK and you will be presented with this window:

  • This folder only: Changes will apply to this folder template only. Changes will begin applying to new sessions created under this folder. Changes will not be passed down to existing sessions or sub folders.

  • This folder and its sessions only: Changes will apply to this folder template and the sessions immediately under this folder. Changes will not be passed down to the subfolders and its sessions.

  • This folder, all subfolders and sessions: Changes will apply to this folder template and everything below it.

  • Select individually: Changes can be applied to sessions that you select individually.

Note: Changes can only be applied down. Changes will not influence any parent folder. Once a folder is configured as a template, you will notice a green gear icon on the bottom right of the folder.
