Some concerns & feature requests - Xshell 4

Thursday, June 16, 2011 11:37 AM - Vikas

Hi,

1. I'm not sure how to use KeyMap. I defined a key "Page Down" to "ls -ltr" but when I hit this key it won't do anything. Any suggestions?

2. Is there any setting to prevent shell timeout?

3. Wondering if you have any plans for Session thumbnails - More like how Zoc does it.

4. Also the facility to select & open multiple session at once. I see if I right click on a folder then it provides me option to open all the belonging sessions. But what if I want to open certain sessions from that folder & not all.

5. A way to move around buttons (commands) in "Quick Command Set"?

6. Is it possible to have various colored icon for sessions (which we can choose for particular session) in session window? Also a comments section for a session which be listed in session window, based on which we could also sort.

7. Again for session window - Possibility to move around (reorder) sessions with mouse within a folder & outside. Also if "Save as" could place the new session to next to current one & not at the end.

8. In Zoc if I keep the Ctrl+Tab pressed then it navigates me through all the sessions - showing it's content. While in Xshell if I keep the "Ctrl + Tab" pressed (& do not release "Tab") then it just navigates through the Tabs & not the sessions, thus showing me only the current session. Is it possible to incorporate this feature.

9. Possible to send "Enter" (Carriage Return) with Mouse Middle button.

Thank you for using Xshell.
1. I'm not sure how to use KeyMap. I defined a key "Page Down" to "ls -ltr" but when I hit this key it won't do anything. Any suggestions?
>> It's a bug that Xshell cannot use key map for pg down key. We will fix this bug soon.

2. Is there any setting to prevent shell timeout?
>> Try using the Keep-alive feature in the session properties. However, depending on the server and network devices, this feature maybe overruled.

3. Wondering if you have any plans for Session thumbnails - More like how Zoc does it.
>> I think this might be a long shot. But, I will submit a feature request.

4. Also the facility to select & open multiple session at once. I see if I right click on a folder then it provides me option to open all the belonging sessions. But what if I want to open certain sessions from that folder & not all.
>> For now, you have to use Ctrl + mouse click to select the session and click the Connect button. Do you have any suggestion?

5. A way to move around buttons (commands) in "Quick Command Set"?
>> Yes. Open the Edit Quick Command Set dialog box (Click the Quick Command icon on Quick Command bar and select Edit). Select a command from the list and click the Move up or Move down button to change its order.

6. Is it possible to have various colored icon for sessions (which we can choose for particular session) in session window? Also a comments section for a session which be listed in session window, based on which we could also sort.
>> I will submit a request for this one as well.

7. Again for session window - Possibility to move around (reorder) sessions with mouse within a folder & outside. Also if "Save as" could place the new session to next to current one & not at the end.
>> You can drag sessions to move in and out of folders. Creating a copied session next to the original one is a nice idea.

>> I will submit a request for this feature.

9. Possible to send "Enter" (Carriage Return) with Mouse Middle button.
>> I am sure this can be done quite easily. Can you tell us when this feature can come in handy?

Thank you for sharing your ideas and taking time to write this post. We will try to incorporate your ideas into future Xshell releases.

Thanks for taking them into consideration. Here's my comments -
1. Thanks for taking care of it.
2. Can we provide an option of providing cutomized string or command which will be send to terminal after say X (configurable) seconds/minutes.
3. This comes handly while we're trying to watch all the sessions in one go. More like a dashboard.
4. I find the List view is good for multiple selection but not the Tree View. Can we have this facility in Tree view as well?
5. Yes, I figured that out later.
6. Thanks
7. I was wondering if I could move around (reorder) within a folder.
8. Thanks
9. Whenever I want to resend a command I would like to copy & paste it with mouse but then to send an Enter I have to use keyboard. If Middle mouse button provided that feature then it'll be quicker & I won't have to move my hand (I'm lazy ;).

Hi,

I would love to see some of these in Xshell 5 beta. Specially the "Sending Enter key with Mouse middle click'. Please let me know if you have plans to implement these.

Thanks Guys !! I see some suggestions from my earlier posts already implemented in Xftp 5. Have few more for your consideration -
1. Ability to present the "Session Manager" when I hit the new tab ("+") button?
2. Ability to execute the 'Expect & Send' script (respective to that session) while creating a duplicate session through context menu option on a live session?
3. Could you also reduce the tab font size to let's say 8 or 9pt. Also if you guys could reduce the extra space it takes beside the label. As you can see in attached screenshot it only let's me view 5 open tabs at a given time.
4. Ability to send control characters e.g. Ctrl+C, Ctrl+D to all the sessions?
5. Hitting Ctrl+C, Ctrl+D leaves a character on the terminal (like L).
6. Immediate-Paste (on the prompt) of single line selection with Right mouse button (while keeping Shift key pressed)?
7. I see in Xftp5 you guys provided the options to change the tab color for a particular session. Thanks! Is it also possible to show the same icon color in Session Manager?
8. The Compose Bar history is not visible in maximized windows. I can only see it once I resize the window to make it smaller. I mean the history combo when I click the arrow on the right of Compose Bar.
9. I don't see the Compose Bar in Full Screen mode. Would be great if it's there.
10. Jumping between Xftp & Xshell - would be great if it could also set the current directory in the opened application. e.g. if i open Xshell from Xftp then Xshell should automatically switch to that directory after login.

Thank you very much for your feedback. These will help us make better products in the future.

1. Ability to present the "Session Manager" when I hit the new tab ("+") button?
You can open the Sessions dialog box by using the Ctrl-o key combination. Can you use this instead?

3. Could you also reduce the tab font size to let's say 8 or 9pt. Also if you guys could reduce the extra space it takes beside the label. As you can see in attached screenshot it only let's me view 5 open tabs at a given time.
We plan to improve the tab feature in Xshell. It won't be just reducing the font size because it will only increase the visible tabs by probably one or two. We are thinking about adding multi-lined tab feature so that you can see all open tabs without scrolling through them.

4. Ability to send cont rol characters e.g. Ctrl+C, Ctrl+D to all the sessions?
This feature has been added to Xshell 5. You can enable Select Send key input to all sessions option under the Tools menu.

6. Paste the single line selection with Right mouse button (while keeping Shift key pressed)?
This is available in Xshell 4. Go to the Tools > Options and then select the Keyboard and mouse tab. Enable the Copy selected texts to the clipboard automatically option and then for the Right button option, select Paste clipboard contents.

Thanks for consideration. Here's my comments -

1. Ability to present the "Session Manager" when I hit the new tab ("+") button?
You can open the Sessions dialog box by using the Ctrl-o key combination. Can you use this instead?
>> That's fine. I was wondering if you could give an option for whether to open the 'Session Manager' on new tab button ('+') click or open local shell.

3. Could you also reduce the tab font size to let's say 8 or 9pt. Also if you guys could reduce the extra space it takes beside the label. As you can see in attached screenshot it only let's me view 5 open tabs at a given time.

>> Could you keep an option of tab scrolling as well as multi-line? Since multi-line will take up some space from the terminal window.

4. Ability to send control characters e.g. Ctrl+C, Ctrl+D to all the sessions?
This feature has been added to Xshell 5. You can enable Select Send key input to all sessions option under the Tools menu.
>> Regular keystrokes are fine, I'm still not able to figure out how to send the control characters.

6. Paste the single line selection with Right mouse button (while keeping Shift key pressed)?

>> I'm asking if its possible to paste at the same time while I'm selecting the content while keeping the shift key pressed

[VIKAS] yeah that's fine. It's just that Left click was more convenient for me.

4. Ability to send control characters e.g. Ctrl+C, Ctrl+D to all the sessions?
This feature has been added to Xshell 5. You can enable Select Send key input to all sessions option under the Tools menu.

[VIKAS] There are scenarios when I run the same script on multiple hosts simulaneously from the Compose bar sending to all sessions. At times I need to kill the running script. One way is to go to each session & hit Ctrl+C. I was wondering if I could use Compose bar to send it across all the sessions.

[VIKAS] Zoc (http://www.emtec.com/zoc) has this feature. You'll have to set the settings as described in screenshot. Click 2-3 times to get the icon partially selected. Once you connect to any host you can try to copy single line while keeping Shift pressed.
